Genus name only (no specific epithet given). Platysmurus is a compound of Greek platy- (flat, broad) + -urus (tail), with an intrusive -s- at the junction (cf. Platysteira, Platyscelis). The name functions as a Latin masculine noun, nominative singular. Platysmurus is in fact a genus of Asian treepies (family Corvidae), the Long-tailed Magpie, whose notably long, graduated tail inspired the name.
Pronunciation
- plat-iz-MEW-rus Antepenult stress: penult vowel (u) is short and followed by only one consonant with no two-vowel sequence following, but the antepenult is 'mew' (long u before a single consonant), so stress falls on the antepenult MEW (third syllable from the end of a four-syllable word: plat-iz-MEW-rus).
Other readings
platy- + smur- + -us, where smur is interpreted from Greek smuros (a kind of dark/spotted fish, used loosely for dark coloration) — but this is speculative and the tail reading is far more consistent with the bird's morphology.
The junction consonant -s- between platy- and -urus is a morphological feature sometimes described as an epenthetic -s-; it appears in several other compound genera (e.g. Platyscelis, Platysternum) and may also reflect the Greek genitive/stem form. Smurus as a standalone root is not in the dictionary; the segmentation platy- + -s- + -urus is favored by the bird's biological context (its long flat tail). Platysmurus leucopterus is the type species, the Black Magpie of Southeast Asia.
