Myopornis
my-o-POR-nis
Genus
"Short-sighted bird" — a genus of Old World warblers named for a myopic or skulking appearance
Literally: short-sighted bird (or: horse-fly bird)
| Part | Meaning | Language | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| myop- | short-sighted; a horse fly | Greek (myop, =s) | stem of myops; the -o- is part of the root, not a separate connecting vowel |
| -ornis | a bird | Greek (orni, =s) | standard terminal element in bird genera; nominative singular |
A Greek compound noun: myop- (stem of myōps, 'short-sighted') + ornis ('bird'), treated as a feminine Latin noun of the third declension in taxonomic use. The two roots join directly, the final -p of myop- abutting the initial vowel of ornis without a connecting vowel, which is normal when the second element begins with a vowel.
Pronunciation
- my-o-POR-nis Penult rule 5: the penult vowel 'o' in '-por-' is short but is followed by two consonants (r + n), so the penult is stressed.
Other readings
myo- (muscle/mouse) + por- (pore, Latin) + -nis: morphologically possible but semantically weak and leaves the ending -nis unexplained; rejected in favour of myop + ornis.
opor- (autumn, Greek) embedded at positions 2–6 is an artefact of the search window; it crosses both roots and is not a real segmentation.
Myopornis is an Old World warbler genus (family Sylviidae/Locustellidae); the name alludes to the bird's retiring, hard-to-observe behaviour, consistent with 'short-sighted' or 'skulking'. The root myop could in principle be parsed as myo- (mouse/muscle) + p-, but that leaves an unattached consonant; myop as a single dictionary root is the correct reading. The alternative myo- (mouse) + pornis is sometimes suggested informally, but pornis is not a standard Greek compound element; ornis attaching to myop- is strongly preferred.
