Mayrornis
MAY-ror-nis
Genus
The greater bird
Literally: Larger bird
| Part | Meaning | Language | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mayor- | Larger, greater | Latin (maior) | Latin comparative adjective maior/major; spelled here in an anglicised/French-influenced form 'Mayor' rather than classical 'Maior'. Alternate reading: an honorific proper name (see notes). |
| -ornis | A bird | Greek (orni, =s, -th, -tho) | Standard bird-genus terminal element, from Greek ὄρνις; used here in its standalone form -ornis |
A hybrid compound (Latin head + Greek terminal element) forming a single Latin neuter/feminine genus name. 'Maior-' is the Latin comparative adjective meaning 'larger/greater', and '-ornis' is the Greek word for 'bird'. The genus name is treated as a feminine Latin noun, as is conventional for all genus names ending in -ornis. An alternative reading is that 'Mayor-' commemorates a person surnamed Mayor (see notes), which was a common practice in 19th–20th century ornithological nomenclature.
Pronunciation
- MAY-ror-nis Antepenult stress: the penult vowel 'o' is short and followed by only one consonant before the final vowel, so stress retreats to the antepenult syllable 'MAY'.
Other readings
Mayor- as a proper-name honorific + -ornis (bird): 'Mayor's bird'. This reading cannot be ruled out without consulting the original 1905 description by Rothschild & Hartert, since the non-classical 'ay' spelling weakly favours a personal name over classical Latin 'maior'.
mai- (Greek: a kind of crab, from root mai/maia) + r- + -ornis (bird): this segmentation is phonologically forced and semantically incoherent; it is extremely unlikely.
The root 'maior' (Latin: larger/greater) was confirmed in the dictionary (id 3551). The spelling 'Mayor' in the genus name is an anglicised or French-influenced variant of classical Latin 'maior/major', a common liberty in 19th–20th century scientific nomenclature. The root 'orni, =s' (Greek: a bird) was confirmed in the dictionary (id 4390). An alternative interpretation is that 'Mayor-' is an honorific for a person named Mayor. Without access to the original species description (Rothschild & Hartert, 1905, Novit. Zool. 12), certainty is medium; the non-classical 'ay' spelling slightly favours a proper name, but orthographic liberalisation of 'maior' → 'mayor' is also well attested in period nomenclature. Mayrornis is a small genus of monarch flycatchers (family Monarchidae) endemic to Pacific islands (Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands). Three species are currently recognised: M. lessoni, M. schistaceus, and M. vitiensis.
